Bringing Pets to Misawa

This article will give you an overview of the process of bringing pets to Misawa. I highly recommend that you get started on this process as soon as possible!

First and foremost it is going to cost you.... :( You must get a USDA Health Certificate and the appropriate vaccinations. (If you contact your local base veterinarian it will probably save you some bucks)

Recently Japan enacted stricter laws to prevent the spread of rabies and other diseases in the country. All cats and dogs must receive a rabies test, then a blood test to check there immunity levels. If they pass the immunity test they will need to have a 180 quarantine period before they can enter the country.

This can be especially tricky for military due to the duration of time required. Luckily Misawa Air Base has opened a pet kennel (space available basis) for those people that must reside off-base. Also if you reside on-base this quarantine period can be completed in base housing.

Note- If you have a dog that is 100 pounds or more in weight it cannot be flown from Tokyo to Misawa Airport on JAL. The airlines has a restriction. Misawa services has a bus that they use to transport individuals to and from Narita and Yokota. They can transport beasts.....

A detailed list of the requirements can be found at these websites-

Pets are also available for purchase in Misawa.

The base has a facility called PAWS (Pets Are Worth Saving). It is always brimming with great animals that need good homes. They also appreciate donations (food, plastic bags, cleaning supplies) and anyone willing to volunteer a few hours.

Pets are available out in Misawa City and Hachinohe. These stores supply every breed imaginable, but be prepared to pay. The dogs range from about $300 to $1200 depending on age and breed. Cats are anywhere from $200 to $900. Pets in Japan are considered an investment.

Shimoda Mall off the toll road has a pet store. The Fantasy Dome in Hachinohe also has two pet stores.

Hope this helps!

You have a beautiful blog.

I liked your photograph today and also the story about bringing pets into Japan.

I began taking photos in Japan in 1953 with a new Canon film camera. All of the photos I took are housed in the Sendai City Museum of History and Folklore in Sendai.

I am still taking photos but now all digital. I believe i was in Misawa in 1954.

Thank you!

Why were you in Sendai and Misawa? I have not been to Sendai (other than passing through)... Had tickets to go the last time I was here and a certain child decided it was time to meet the world.

Cheers!

Hello, love the website, it is incredible! It appears my wife and I may be PCSing to Misawa next summer and wife is very nervous about taking a large dog (110 lbs.) with us. Do you know anyone who has taken a large dog with them? Is the bus service that transports "beasts" easy to use? We are just trying to lessen the anxiety about the trip before it happens. Thanks!

Thank you so much for this posting. My father-in-law sent me the link for your blog. My husband just got orders to Misawa. We should arrive sometime around September 2009.

I have a cat who will be about 14 months old when we arrive. I was clueless about bringing pets. Thank you for the info! :)

Thank you for having a one-stop place for info. on Misawa. We'll be PCSing in June 2009, and will bring our two dogs along for the new adventure. We're so excited! :)

Our dog is about 100 lbs, and we had to bring him here using a rental van. We were told that the bus couldn't fit him, because they can't fit an extra large size crate. So, I don't know if you need to alter your page about bringing big dogs on the bus. Maybe we were informed wrong though?? But we did have to bring ours in a rental van. You might also want to add that Northwest Airlines was great with handling our huge dog....most other airlines wouldn't take him because of his size.
