Misawa Schools

In effort to ease the fear for many parents and the millions of questions that the children might ask about their new schools here is some great information on Misawa schools.

First off they are really good! I am not sure if it is due to the great teachers, excellent staff or the families that make up the Misawa community or maybe a mixture of the above.

Misawa currently has two elementary schools, Cummings and Sollars. One junior high/high school, Edgren. One preschool program and two child development centers.

Sollars Elementary School
is located on main base. Kindergarten thru Sixth grade attend the school. School hours are 8:20 am to 2:35 pm. Facilities near the school are the main base chapel, Yoiko CDC and the Base Exchange (BX). More information on Sollars can be found at the website below.

Cummings Elementary School
is located in north area of Misawa Air Base. It mainly serves the population of Misawa Air Base that is housed in the North Area housing. Kindergarten through Sixth Grade attend the school. Facilities near the school are the Freedom Fitness Center, North Area Shoppette and the Fire Department. School hour are 8:05 am to 2:25 pm. More information can be found on the following website.

Edgren High School
is located on main base. Students in grades seven through twelve attend the school here. It is a combined middle high school. Facilities near the school are the Potter Fitness Center, Library, Bowling Alley and the Mokuteki Cafe. School hours are 8:10 am to 2:45 pm. More information can be found on the following website.

Child Development Centers / Misawa Daycare

Yoiko Child Development Center

Zeamer Child Development Center
is located in North Area across the street from the North Area Shoppette and Fire Department. Zeamer provides care for children six weeks to preschool. Care is provided Monday through Friday 6:30 am to 5:30 pm. This center also has a part-day enrichment program during the school year for children that stay at home. The cost is minimal and is determined on your sponsors rank and family income. (DSN 315-226-2419)

Cheli School Age Program
is an after school program for children Kindergarten thru Sixth Grade. K-1st is located in BLDG 10 next to Sollars Elementary School. 2nd thru 6th grade programs are located in BLDG 412 across from the hospital (pictured left). Hours are 6:00 am to 8:30 am and 2:30 to 6:00 pm. (DSN 315-226-2837 and 315-226-2266)

Misawa also offers a Sure Start Preschool program. It is limited to pay grades of E-4 and below and on a space available basis. Please contact the Family Child Care office at DSN 226-CARE for more information.

In addition to the child care centers there are many Family Child Care Providers in the area as well. For more information on this service please visit the following website.

The school that you child will attend will be based on your housing location unless special circumstances exist. If you have any further questions please see the websites above or send me an email.

There is also a homeschool group, Misawa Home Educators(MHE) for those who choose to homeschool their children. MHE consists of homeschooling families who work closely together to provide the best homeschooling experience at Misawa Air Base, Japan. You can join the group or find out more about homeschooling in Misawa by going to this link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MisawaHomeEducators/?v=1&t=search&ch=web&pub=groups&sec=group&slk=1 When you become a member of MHE, you will have access to resources, friendship for your kids and yourself with other homeschooling parents, communication with other homeschoolers, field trips, parties, mom's night out and more to support your homeschooling efforts! We enjoyed being part of this group while we lived in Japan. It helped enhance our homeschool journey while we lived in Misawa.

Some of the people on the list for family daycare provide 1/2 day preschool programs too.

The Sure Start program is not limited to only E4 and below. Others can always apply, it just depends on space available and specific family situations. There is a Sure Start class in both elementary schools.

Also there are preschool services for children with disabilities. PSCD classes can be found in both elementary schools.

The Fun & Learning Center off base (Japanese owned, American run)provides part & full time daycare, as well as running a preschool type program in the morning. The fees are set at the same price for everyone, not based on income.

Thanks so much for this! I started school in Sollars. I miss that place so much. I miss the whole base. I wonder how much it's changed in fifteen years.

So I'd like more information on the preschool. My 4 year old son has some developmental delays--he was assessed through our local public Child Find program--but I'm not sure if that's what is meant by "disabilities". Also he is not 100% potty trained-almost there but not quite. Same for his 2 1/2 year old brother (who has no delays). So would there be any opportunities for preschool for them?
