Misawa AB Housing
There is a variety of housing available on Misawa Air Base. The regular housing units shown above are 4 units in one building. 2, 3 and 4 bedroom housing is available. Most of the North Area housing is under construction to renovate the houses. New units are also being built on Main Base.
Pets are allowed with the exception of towers. Only some of the towers (see the first picture) are approved for dogs, no cats are allowed.
There are pro's and con's to each style. In the regular housing you are responsible for yard maintenance and snow shoveling during the winter. In the towers there is assigned hallway duty where the interior must be cleaned and swept. Overall both are great options and most people are very friendly in the neighborhoods.

Do you have any info on 4 bdrm sq footage, and what type of flooring i.e. carpet, wood, etc.?
I don't have any floor plans or square footage. I will try to get some, but in the meantime I would call the housing office on-base.
Oh yes and the flooring is all carpet except in the kitchen and bathrooms, linoleum.
Thank you! I would be lost w/o your page.
Hello! I saw this question and wanted to offer the input that my husband recently received from the housing office there at Misawa after sending them an email (we're PCS'ing in Feb. 09).
Q>1. Is there a rank requirement to live off-base, and if so, what is the normal waiting period?
A> There is no rank requirement, the normal waiting period is Zero day.
Q>2. In preparation for my move, I have a lot of lawn equipment that I need to either store, sell, or bring. Will I need lawn equipment at on-base or off-base housing there? I'd hate to bring it and realize that I didn't
need it.
A>If you can move to on-base house which is H-style housing you really need the lawn equipment.
If your house will be off-base housing, they do not need lawn equipment because it is a small yard.
Q>3. Do you have any floor plans available for me to look at for base housing? If you could also send any flyers or brochures that you have, I would appreciate it.
A>Since you have 4 dependant children, you are eligible for 4bedroom. Please see attachment.
Q>4. Lastly, what would be the size authorization for me in base housing? I am married and have 3 dependant children (ages: 1, 9, and 11). One of the children does not live with me full time (the 9 year old), however may be visiting from time to time.
A> 4 bedroom house size is 1585 SF, the waiting period is 6 months as of today. It will be short period in December, I hope.

(They also included the actual floorplans but I'm not sure how to upload it on here for you to see.)
belstarr76 thank you for all the information. If you send the floor plans to misawalife@gmail.com I will upload them for everyone. Cheers!
Did you ever receive copies of the floor plans for the housing units? I am arriving sometime in December/January and would like to have an idea of the 3 and 4 bedroom unit lay outs.
I've lived in a tower for 3 years and have not had to do any hallway cleaning. We have a mamasan that does that - I thought it was the same for every tower. (?)
I live in a tower unit and to me it seems that the layout is a bit better for "use of space" than H-Style units. (As for square footage, I would be surprised if they are what they say are.) I am comparing our unit to other 4 bedroom units for "overall useable space"
That being said, in the three bedroom tower, there is storage available on each floor as well as a larger unit on the first floor. There is also a storage closet in the unit. The master bedroom is en-suite and is large enough for a queen bed, a larger dresser and a hutch/armoire. bedroom 2 can fit a queen bed and small dresser or hutch. The closet is smaller, but is adequate. Bedroom 3 can fit a twin bed or bunkbeds and a small dresser & small hutch. this room has two closets as well.
The living and dining area are combined, but with a bit of creative ideas ,it works just fine. We have rather large furniture as well. The sofa is a u-style and I was certain it wouldn't fit when looking at the empty unit, but surprisingly it works and is not overcrowded.
There is a mamasan that cleans the common areas, so you are not responsible for the hallways. There are many parks/playareas within reach to the towers, at least in the North area.
Make sure you ask housing how old your carpet is in the unit. They have all the info on when it was last put in. The "life expectancy" of the carpet is 7 years, therefore you will more than likely be responsible for replacement if it is newer carpet and there is more than normal wear and tear.
Hi, i am wondering if anyone can help me. My husband just got his orders, and i have been told that we need to apply for housing asap, because we have two german sheps. I dont what to do, or how to get started. Can anyone help me please?
Love your website. We will be heading to Misawa in Jan 2009. I look forward to getting there and visiting all the great places you have on here.
Hello, my wife, daughter and I will be PCSing to Misawa this summer. We've heard the off base houses are COLD in the winter! Do you have any intel on the heating for off base houses? Thanks!!
Hello, I am PCSing with my family in June 09. I am having problems finding floor plans for the on base housing and update pics inside and out: if all possible. By reading the emails posted on your website it seems to be an issue with getting pics. If someone could send me some pics to timothy.v.jones@navy.mil it help my family out alot. I am kind of in the dark with this hole transition to Japan. If you guys have any information that will be helpful to my family; we would be greatful.
Thanks,
Chief Petty Officer Jones and family. Hope to see you guys in Japan soon.

Hello, I live off base and I don't think my house is cold. Our heat is kerosene. There are heater in every room so you can control how hot you want what room. There are pros and cons to living on or off base. The reason we moved off base was so we could have air conditioning. However, living off base I gave up having a dishwasher but I would rather have the air for my Allergies.
I have a duaghter with allergies and she is on the EFMP will this keep me from getting orders? Also I have housing does not have AC but have heard AC was/will be going in to renovated housing...is this true?
I have read there's no AC in base housing but have heard AC was/will be installed soon...is this true? Also have a child on the EFMP for allergies will this stop my assigment? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I was just given the link to this site and it's wonderful. We are PCSing this oct. I have heard and read a lot about the on base housing but I have not seen much on the off base housing. We really want to experience the culture of Japan and as we have been in a house for the last 5 years, don't relish the idea of apartment living again. Is there any information on the off base housing? Thank you very much!!!
hello! i love your blog and have saved it in my favs. my husband got orders yesterday to misawa and he is in afghanistan right now! anyway we are due to be there in june 2010 and i am needing all the help i can get. i really don't know where to start. do we need to apply for housing soon? is on or off base better?
This will be our second time to Misawa. The first time we lived in a 3 bedroom tower. We will now need a 4 bedroom. We will want to live on main base again. Are there 2 types of 4 bedroom homes on main base? Can anyone tell me anything about them? I'm particularly interested in storage space outside of the home. Where I live in Ohio, I have a 2 car garage and I'm wondering where I'm going to put everything because I know I won't have a garage there.
We just found out that we are coming to Misawa in May. We have three boys 13,8 and 1. Are there alot of 4 bedrooms and are they in the towers??? Do they have carpet? Thanks for all the help!!
Hi. My family and I will be coming to Misawa Sept. 2010, and I was wondering about my bed. I was told we wouldn't be able to bring our king size bed. They told me it would take up too much space. Is there any truth to this? It might seem ridiculouse but I really really love my bed and I would probably cry if I have to leave it.
Thanks!!
Hi,
I am a federal civil service employee (GS-11) and will be moving to Misawa this summer. Does anyone know if I'm eligible for base housing and if so, what type. I am a single male with no dependents.
Thanks
Can you tell me what the living arrangements for a single NCO would be? Is there a chance that I will be living on base or are single NCO's required to live off-base and what is the typical waiting period?
Hello, there is a big chance that my husband will be getting orders to Misawa. so i wanted all the information on the housing that u have? What are the different floor plans? pics of the housing. thanks
Hi everyone,
Please note that currently (May 2010) there is a requirement for everyone to live on base for the first year, unless base housing is unable to accommodate your family for some reason. Don't despair! In the winter the roads are much better on base, so you can adjust easier in your first winter.
I wanted to give an update to the portion of pets in the base towers. Last year the approval became finalized to allow pets in select towers on main base and north area. As in other pet approved housing on base cats, dogs, fish, caged animals are all allowed in the tower apartments. The only towers that are approved by the base housing office for pets are towers 231 and 115 (main base) and towers 1935 and 1936 (north area). I hope this helps anyone coming to join us in Misawa!

ive always wanted to visit japan and i figured, instead of visit, why not go and work. i found a job and im looking for any information on housing for civilians that would be working on base.

My husband got orders to Misawa, we will be there in october. I just wanted to know Do you make more money on base or off base? also which is better to live in on base housing in main gate or north gate? I would greatly appreciated if anyone can comment any information is greatly appreciated. I qualify for a 3 bedroom i was told by the housing office, i also have a dog.
Although the AF doesn't have floor plans for the housing here, you can access
www.housing.navy.mil
and click on Navy Housing One Stop. Then on the right side do a search for A-Z, then choose Atsugi.
There are minor differences, but most of the plans are the same or very close!
The floor plans for Atsugi housing are the same floor plans as those for Misawa.
Also the 1585 sq ft for the 4 BR is a measurement that they use from wall to wall and doesn't take into account that almost all of the closets stick out into the room and therefore you lose that whole wall for positioning any furniture as well as needing to open the closet doors to get to your clothes.
My husband and I are PCSing to Misawa in October, we found a great site with many floor plans and pictures of the newly remodeled living units...enjoy!
http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/pages/Misawa-Housing-Office/136682863029740
Here is a picture of the houses, sorry I don't have the floor plan but these are off the offical site. http://www.misawa.af.mil/library/newcomerspage.asp on the bottom left look under housing information it'll bring up a .pdf file and show you pictures
We just got orders today and are to be there by the end of October. I have so many questions! I've never done this before-we've only been married a year now. For off base housing, is there a site to look at houses? How much does a typical house off base cost?
Is is better to move on base or off base? Do they have health care jobs available for spouses on base? Should you buy a car in Japan or have your vehicle shipped?
My wife and I will be moving there Jan 2012. We were told that we are required to live on base since we are married. Was planning on living off base. Is that true that we cannot live off of base?
If PCSing with dogs and a cat do you have an option on either the tower house or the regular base housing? I have two large dogs and a small cat. Thank you!!
