A little about life in Misawa, Japan.... The great places, stupid things that happen to me, tips and tricks to make life easier in Misawa and random things I find in Japan while tugging two maniacs... children along for the ride.
If you are a newcomer to Misawa here is a quick bit of information on the housing available to you. I will be posting some pictures and more information in the days to come!
THANK YOU! We are coming in July 2008 and will definitely be living off base. I thought our US appliances would 'work off base (not counting clocks of course) but the Housing brochure says they won't. Is this true? Do we have to get new appliances 'there'? (I'm thinking things like coffee maker, hair dryer, etc.)
I live off base as well and they will work off base. The only ones that won't work are some alarm clocks so we bought ours over here. Coffee pots, hair dryers, microwaves and all other small appliances work.
I will have to let the housing office know, thank you!
Whew! That's a relief! I was hoping it was just a typo in the brochure. Also, I've heard rumors that dishwashers are hard to come by. I'm thinking I should grab one in the states and have it shipped over. Think that might work?
Hey-- I'd like to share our blog link with you if you're interested. Who knows, we may run into each other on the base sometime. :)
VERY HELPFULL BLOG !!!... WE'LL BE MOVING TO MISAWA IN ABOUT 3 MONTHS, AND WE'RE STILL NOT SO SURE ABOUT LIVING ON OR OFF BASE, AS A MILITARY WIFE IT'S THE FIRST TIME OVERSEAS SO DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT. WE'RE BRINGING OUR TWO DOGS WITH US (CHIHUAHUA'S)... WHAT DO YOU THING IS THE BEST OPTION, TO LIVE ON BASE OR OFF BASE?
If you are the explorer type off-base is good. It can be more expensive and a bit isolating, but fun. On base is good because you will save gas and can walk to about everything. I would suggest checking both out if housing gives you the option and sleep on it a couple nights.
My family and I will be relocating to Misawa. I would like to see all images of base houses including the newest ones. Also is their any hair stylist there does full sew-in weaving?
Hi, ill be moving to Misawa Afb in Feb. 09 , and will be coming with my husband and three children. My youngest will be almost 2 months! Im really nervous about bringing a brand new baby and what housing will offer. i would like to know your opinion on whether living on or off base is better?? My husband seems to think off base is better, he thinks we'd make money, but im not sure about that with the three kids?? Also my oldest is 8 and would be coming during the school year, how does that work?! My last concern would be about our cars, are we allowed to bring our vehicles, and is it expensive to buy a car there?? Sorry about all the question, Its my first time overseas......can you tell?!
Greetings, Anonymous- Sounds like you would be better off on-base. After a year you can move off base. We used to make a little money because of the difference in the yen rate, but not so much now.
For an single E-5 in the air force we are forced to move off-base. The navy has dorms available, but I am not sure of the requirements. Best to check with the housing office.
I am a Chief Petty Officer(E-7) in the Navy and I am in the process of negotiating my orders to Misawa. Need to know more about the process for living off base on the local economy. Cost effective?, crowded ,etc. I know that i have a choice but have 2(8 & 2) children and my spouse so i am undecided. Is the housing on base adequate? Thank you for your assistance in advance!
This past fall, the base changed the housing policy to put more families on base. I don't know how this will affect you, as we are already off base. The on base housing is pretty decent and they have made great strides to improving Internet speeds. Off base, there is a nice selection of homes, most with fiber Internet. Most of your electronics will work fine off base. If you send me your email, I can provide more details. BAH should cover rent and utilities. The houses are arranged in batches, scattered about the city. So, not crowded, just small. If you can stow a dishwasher or 2 in your HHG, you can sell them easy!
My wife and I will be moving there in JAN. 2012. I was told that being married and all, that we are required to live on base housing. Is that true or are we able to live off base? Thanks for your site. It helps a lot.

Question: I am an E5 in the Navy and single. What are my options for housing in Misawa?
