Universe market is the largest grocery store in Misawa. It stocks everything that you would expect in an American grocery store. The prices are higher than the commissary, but there are some good finds in the market. Some of the items I like are the fresh fish, produce, pizza bread in the bakery and lunch items (bento boxes).
Hours: 10 am - 11pm Mon thru Sun
Currency: Yen, haven't tried debit or credit
Directions: Travel out the POL gate and go straight through about 7 stoplights. You will pass a Super Dug Asahi and Lawsons. Look for the huge Universe Market sign. Make a left into this parking lot.

We purchase 80% of our food from Off-Base grocery stores with the majority going to Universe.
We especially appreciate the produce. I think the Commissary gets the stuff that the Japanese farmers can't sell in the local markets because of it's lack of quality.

Off base produce is a lot better! I can't tell you how much money I have wasted on moldy corn :(~
My parents tell funny stories about the Commissary's selections from 1983 and 1984 - they once sold Iceburg lettuce by the leaf! Our first Halloween in Misawa, the Commissary didn't have any orange pumpkins, so we bought white ones from off-base. We called them our ghost pumpkins.
yup, off-base produce is a lot better! this is the Universe I live by! good place to buy snacks, packaged desserts, mini ice creams in the cones [great for the kids!] & bento lunches.. and much more!
Thank you for this site. Are you still in Misawa? If so I have some questions. How hard is it to buy a mattress or futon in US sizes? My husband is 6'2" and we are thinking of coming to the area without furniture. What kinds of cars do Americans drive there? It is very snowy, yes? Do you know anything about the gifted program at the HS?
