Misawa Currency
If you are a newcomer here are some quick facts on Japanese currency.
- Yen is the name of the currency used by all Japanese people. It has been around since about the 19th century.
- Yen is available in coin denominations of ¥1 (1 cent), ¥5 (5 cents), ¥10 (10 cents), ¥50 (fifty cents), ¥100 ($1), ¥500 ($5). Bank notes or paper money is available in denominations of ¥1000 ($10), ¥5000 ($50), ¥10000 ($100).
- Since the 1970's the currency rate has dropped steadily. The current trading rate is approximately ¥105 to the US dollar.
- When withdrawing ¥en from the ATM's on base they only dispense ¥5000 notes.
- When receiving change from a Japanese merchant or individual it is not uncommon for them to not count back change. They are very trustworthy and it is considered slightly offensive.
- As credit cards are accepted in many major shopping outlets and restaurants it is always good to carry ¥en with you when traveling around Misawa.
